JOB SUMMARY:
The Field Application Engineer (FAE) will serve as the primary technical liaison between customers and our engineering team, specializing in weather station systems, sonar, and gateway products for Airmar. This role focuses on designing customized system solutions that integrate energy harvesting, data logging, wireless communication, and data presentation/extraction to meet diverse market requirements.
Working at the intersection of customer needs, sales objectives, and product capabilities, the FAE will collaborate directly with customers, sales personnel, engineering teams, and product managers to develop and propose tailored, customer-driven solutions. The role requires strategic thinking in make-or-buy decisions, platform-based design for reusability across markets, and procurement support to ensure cost-effective, scalable solutions.
This position will primarily be based in Milford, NH at Airmar Technology Corporation main office. Business travel will be required and remote work may be available at the discretion of Airmar leadership.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Customer Engagement & Solution Design
Engage directly with customers to understand application requirements, operational constraints, and data objectives
Design customized system architectures around existing weather stations, sonar, and gateway products, including:
Energy harvesting and power management strategies
Data logging and storage solutions
Communication infrastructure and protocols
Data presentation, visualization, and extraction methods
Develop system-level block diagrams and design documentation to illustrate proposed solutions
Conduct feasibility assessments and technical evaluations to ensure solutions meet customer specifications
Provide product demonstrations, proof-of-concept testing, and technical presentations to customers
Strategic Planning & Platform Development
Conduct make-or-buy analysis for system components, evaluating:
Cost-effectiveness of in-house development versus third-party solutions
Technical risks, lead times, and supplier reliability
Long-term strategic value and intellectual property considerations
Total cost of ownership across product lifecycle
Design reusable platform architectures that can be adapted across multiple markets and applications
Identify common building blocks and modular subsystems to maximize design reuse and reduce development time
Define scalable product families that address various market segments with minimal customization
Balance standardization and flexibility to optimize both cost efficiency and market responsiveness
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with the sales team to support technical discussions, qualify opportunities, and assist in closing deals
Partner with product management to communicate market needs, customer feedback, and feature requirements
Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure proposed solutions are technically viable and to resolve implementation challenges
Act as the voice of the customer within the organization, advocating for customer-driven product improvements
Support procurement activities by:
Identifying and evaluating potential suppliers and component vendors
Providing technical specifications and requirements for procurement
Participating in supplier selection and qualification processes
Assessing component availability, lifecycle, and second-sourcing options
Technical Support & Implementation
Provide pre-sales and post-sales technical support, including system configuration guidance and troubleshooting
Assist customers with system integration, installation planning, and commissioning
Develop application notes, technical documentation, and reference designs for common use cases
Troubleshoot field issues related to power systems, connectivity, sensor performance, and data integrity
Apply physics-based analysis to diagnose environmental, mechanical, and electromagnetic challenges
Knowledge Sharing & Market Development
Create and deliver technical training for sales teams, distribution partners, and customers
Identify emerging market opportunities and application trends to guide product development priorities
Document customer requirements, successful implementations, and lessons learned to build institutional knowledge
Represent the company at trade shows, conferences, and customer meetings
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Education
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field
Master's degree preferred, but not required
Strong foundation in physics (mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetics, fluid dynamics) is highly valued
Experience
Minimum 5-10 years of experience in Field Applications Engineering, Systems Engineering, Technical Sales Support, or IoT solution design
Proven track record in customer-facing technical roles with demonstrated ability to design and deliver custom solutions
Experience with embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, or environmental monitoring systems highly desirable
Background in weather stations, IoT devices, industrial sensors, or related products is a strong advantage
Experience with make-or-buy analysis, vendor selection, or procurement support is a plus
Demonstrated success in platform-based design or product family development preferred
